Stay in touch with fellow students

If you attended face-to-face court reporter training, then you were probably able to make connections with other students. Many of those students likely had jobs lined up or know other people in the field. Staying in contact with them might lead to some good opportunities. Be sure to let them know what type of work you are looking for and ask for recommendations. Also, stay in touch with the school you attended. Most court reporting schools have networks of court reporters and often offer job placement services.

Put your name out there

Let people in your community and surrounding areas know that you are skilled and ready to work. Leave your business cards in your doctor’s office. Post a press release in your local paper. And tell everyone you know about your new profession. But don’t stop once you do land an assignment or two. Make sure you present your work as professionally as possible. Have custom folders designed to hand to your clients. And if your budget allows, order some promotional pens that you can leave around town.

Networking is one of the most effective tools for job-hunting. In fact, it accounts for about 60% of all jobs found. And networking can include social events, online groups, or even phone calls. The important thing is to find out where people who need your services are hanging out. In this line of work, these people will mostly consist of attorneys. And because attorneys are business people who are also actively networking, you can find them in a variety of settings around town. One example of such a setting might be service organization groups such as Lions Club or Masons.

Reach out to court reporting agencies

Even if you don’t wish to be employed by a court reporting agency full-time, you might be surprised at the amount of work they can throw your way. They might even be able to give you temporary work when their workload is full. And they could possibly refer you to other local agencies who need your services.

Stay active on social media

Social media can be another way of networking that yields some pretty powerful results. And Facebook is the platform that beats out all the others. Facebook groups can lead to a whole slew of leads that you never would have found otherwise. You can search for and join many different types of groups that are related to your field. These could include, lawyer groups, local business groups, and of course, court reporter groups. But aside from the personal aspect Facebook groups can offer, you can also amp up your profile on LinkedIn to make yourself stand out.
