Baby injured in DWI wreck passes away

A Harlingen baby critically injured after a drunk driving accident has passed away. Baby Mason Villegas fought to stay alive for three days after the accident, but lost that fight on Wednesday evening. He was only six months old. The family told Action 4 News that doctors tried testing baby Mason to see if he could breathe on his own. Unfortunately, the tests were unsuccessful. Mason was ultimately pronounced as brain dead, and the family made the very difficult decision to take him off life support. The suspect allegedly responsible for baby Mason’s death is 20-year-old Joe Montez III. He was arraigned in his hospital bed at Valley Baptist Medical center with a bond set at 0000. At his release, his charges are expected to upgrade to intoxication manslaughter. Funeral arrangements are still in the process. Action 4 News will be the first to let you know those details as they come.
