“The Family” – Fundamentalism, Friends In High Places (Fresh Air – NPR) 1/3

Recorded from NPR’s Fresh Air from WHYY, July 1, 2009 · In the book “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power”, author Jeff Sharlet examines the power wielded by a secretive Christian group known as the Family, or the Fellowship. Founded in 1935 in opposition to FDR’s New Deal, the evangelical group’s views on religion and politics are so singular that some other Christian-right organizations consider them heretical The group also has a connection to a house in Washington, DC, known as C Street. Owned by a foundation affiliated with the Family, C Street is officially registered as a church; in practice, it serves as a meeting place and residence for politicians like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn. The Family, Sharlet writes, is responsible for founding the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a supposedly ecumenical — but implicitly Christian — event attended by the president, members of Congress and dignitaries from around the world. These foreign delegations are often led by top defense personnel, who use it as an opportunity to lobby the most influential people in Washington — and who repay the Family with access to their governments. The group’s approach to religion, Sharlet says, is based on “a sort of trickle-down fundamentalism,” which holds that the wealthy and powerful, if they “can get their hearts right with God … will dispense blessings to those underneath them.” Members of the

I can’t believe, seems this woman thinks anti-abortion is soem kind of atrocity. LOL
I wll search The Family, seems they are the only christians with common sense

  3. trifulquita15 says:

christians are extremely stupids, they supports secular State, in fact they made a secular State, atheists will never support or create a Christian State… so i think atheists are more intelligent than modern christians.

  4. oldikins says:

This was the reason that Billy Graham, a few months ago, made a statement that ” I wish I had stayed out of politics”. The Rev. Graham has been involved in many political attempts to manipulate govt . I always thought he was a really good speaker, just didn’t know he wasn’t always such a good human being. Sad when your heroes fall.

  5. GrievousCommander says:

    And you called me crazy.

I think you shouldn’t take acid before making YouTube comments.

  6. imaginativelads says:

“Extremely dangerous and morally bankrupt people” flourish because good men like you do nothing. The ONLY solution to this problem, unfortunately, is a FINAL SOLUTION. The extermination of these rabid animals should be fairly easy if one were to go about it the right way. After all, how hard could it be? Look the police can’t monitor everyone, all of the time, so why doesn’t someone simply step up to the play and take one for the team? Where did all the crazies on the left go?

  7. imaginativelads says:

@illywacker1That’s why the only way to solve this problem is to exterminate the high ranking members of the c street family.Violence may not solve all the problems but it is a temporary solution. My suggestion is to use the Godfather as a model for the systematic extermination of all high ranking c street members. Now, that being said, I would not personally do this, which automatically frees me from any legal responsibility, BUT a lone wolf who is paid very to do it,I would applaud and support.

  8. Lindy Lama says:

America might end up with a theocracy after all – then try and get rid of them while they are claiming God is on their side.

  9. Friida182 says:

i’ve read that they think people should express their love through sex. Sex with everyone, kids, related etc. This is crazy, poor poor children who are born in to this shit!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. ALLFOR95PERCENT says:

THIS PUTS LIGHT ON THE REPUBLICAN FAVORITS–DON’T HELP THE HELPLESS, DON’T HELP THE UNFORTUNATE, PRIVATIZE SOC SEC, LEAVE BIG BUSINESS AND WALL STREET ALONE. JUST GATHER WEALTH FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR BUDDIES.–THE RICH WILL HELP EVERYONE.-YEH, RIGHT. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE WAY CURRENT REPUBLICAN LEADERS THINK—-I WONDER HOW MANY OF THEM BELONG TO “THE FAMILY”. VERY SCARY. SEE” MARILYN ON NOVEMBER ELECTIONS”.

  11. George Hammond says:

The most scary thing about this is that 1,000 years from now (if we’re all still here), is that modern day religion will be looked at as 20th Century Mythology. Think about it. As the level of intellectualism rises, the need to rely on religion will diminish. Organized religion is based on fear and superstition, not science and spirituality, which is the true wave of the future.

  12. ScaperSteph says:

One more thing… isn’t what these men want to happen in this country treason?

  13. ScaperSteph says:

I’m reading this book right now… It’s bizarre/scary stuff to me… feels like I’m reading about an alien world. I’m the exact opposite of them as an atheist who is VERY libertarian… I don’t trust authoritarians at all.

  14. asubjectiveopinion says:

No wonder atheists have such a hard time in the US.

  15. jsr1200 says:

what you should worry about,is when things really start to happen.Things that will leave people no alternative but to seek the GOD stuff. They will be there, to further basterdize what’s been written. They will be put into power by those who don’t truly know what’s what with the GOD stuff.Enslavement will follow. These people are not of GOD,not by a longshot.

  16. Arcane1Soldier says:

You are right, but remember, all the players in the officer on BOTH and ALL sides are their pawns. Even if we take them all out of office and alike, they will just get replaced by more minions. I will say this with a sad heart, but for nearly 300 years, these so called Elite groups, have spread their roots and extended their reach in ever part in the world. Just like Terminator movies, there is no Super computer and way to stop it, they are every where.

  17. oregonopps says:

I found out about it yesterday. Did you hear the coast to coast am show were this author talked about this as well? We are screwed if we don’t take these bitches out of office now.

  18. ModernPatriotsUnited says:

I am sure that when investigated further, there will be evidence of high treason. Sam Brownback is a member according to the author of The Family. Brownback proclaims conservative values but is involved in a freakish cabal like this. Voters must research their reps!

  19. Sigolet says:

This is all about as surprising as, say, the revelation that NPR has a pro-Jewish, pro-Israeli, generally left-leaning bias that they do not explicitly acknowledge.

    Shocking!

  20. Arcane1Soldier says:

I only found out about this Family today. More confusion to be added to my roster of who rules the world. So i guess this Family is bigger then Rotchschilds? Jesuits? Illuminaty? ahhhhhhhhhh, to damn many secret societies. I still say that even though many say Rothschilds are at the top of the pyramid, i agree and still think there is another 1 that sits at teh top{ not satan}, just a small family that powers over all and no one knows of it at all.

  21. MannyMoonz81 says:

Reason why people don’t pay atention is because they don’t care unless it effects their life. These religious idiots are political satanists. This mafia needs to register as a lobbiest group or go to prison for tax evasion.

  22. ibejoestern says:

Not Taliban. Taliban is a nationalist group. Al Qaeda is the religious one.
